3 ways to Avoid Duplicate Content with Blog Posts

Duplicate content becomes a big issue when it comes to blogging, and it can significantly effect your ranking in Search Engines. While that is said, I am going to be pointing out some key things i notice that you can do as well on your blogs to avoid duplicate content. Not only these will help you avoid duplicate content, but it will also help you increase ranking of your inner pages in search engine as well as give you a chance of getting higher pagerank.

First thing you need to do is get rid of those archives pages. Yes i know it comes in with the default template, but it can be turned off, and i seriously recommend it to be turned off because half of your real users won’t even bother using the archives if you have a prominent search button on your website. Why should they digg through your archives when they can just type a keyword and get the results through the serach feature. It has no benefit what so ever as for SEO Perspective, but it does have some disadvantages and one thing is that it will create additional pages with duplicate content. Your indexed page count might increase in google and other search engines, but when those additional pages are duplicate content, then it becomes a bit conflicting.

Next you can eliminate the factor of duplicate content by displaying posts in more then one category. While it is ok to do it sometimes if it is absolutely necessary, but try to find the most accurate category for the post. For example i could’ve put this post in both SEO and For Starters as this is something that starters can use, but so can the current bloggers and it is seo related so i decided that it should belong in SEO Category not both, but like my Expansion Template Post which was both for phpLD and Wordpress therefore i couldn’t just post it in WP Themes section, but if i just post it in the Freebies then my wp themes collection would be separated therefore i had no choice but to put it in the categories. Those are some choice that as a blogger you would have to make.

The third one is in the full post, so do read that as that one is the most important one.

Genuine links through link-baiting

While we know that Google is cracking down on Paid links as they have penaltise multiple popular sites along with lowering the Pagerank of many sites. This actions send a message that we need to stop (Obvious Paid Linking), and go toward more of genuine links. Now my definition of genuine links is organic link which was linked because you had something interesting on your website. How the heck will you get something interesting? The process of getting links through the interesting topic of your website for free is called Link-baiting. This idea has been around for quiet some time, but it still works.

Most search engines, specially Google, relies on the quality of links to determine the link popularity of the website which determines your Search Engine Ranking Position(s) (SERPs). Therefore the ultimate goal of webmasters has evolved into getting backlinks for their website. Link-baiting gets you backlink and gains you loyal users as well because if you are offering something for free which interest your user then they will stay at your website and keep coming back to it to use your service.

Not only just that, they will link to your website on other places such as Online Communities (Forums), their websites, blogs, etc. How will Google respond to that? or any other search engine? Their actions will be somewhat liks this:

User’s site link to yours because of good content -> Search Engine says user’s website is suggesting that your website is quality so they increase your authority -> This automated authority change in their database automatically changes the SERPs -> which leads in you ranking higher than you usually did.

Also this genuine linking directly increases your pagerank because more quality backlinks determines the pagerank of your website.

Now i hope that i have clarified what link-baiting is and how effective it is if used wisely. Now from here on i will explain how to use link-baiting to get genuine links.

Role of Design in SEO and Indexing

Often times, it becomes a questionable thought whether design matter in seo and indexing rate. Often times people double guess themselves and leave the design part out. Often because a quality design costs alot. Perhaps, that is a personal choice, but in reality does it matter or not?

This question was raised by a MOG at Digitalpoint:

I believe that YES the design matters in increasing the index rate and a better SEO. A smart SEO Company once taken a project, make adjustments toward the design and how the content is organized to shape it in a way so it is both user-friendly and Search engine friendly. While many webmasters due to various reasons could not get unique custom seo-friendly designs, but here are some advices that you might want to be looking into unique, or free designs when you get them.

Believe it or not, but the design does not have to be tableless. It helps the bot crawl faster if the site is tableless, but the structure of the content matters the most. Using the effective <h2><h3> tags respectively plays an essential role when you have the content organized.

In all cases of design how ever it looks, in the coding, the content should appear above everything, MOST IMPORTANTLY, the sidebar. Why? Because sidebar tends to contain multiple links, Site Navigation link, Sponsor links, Partner links, and such.

Even if the design is coded completely tableless, it can have the sidebar before the content. Various ways to go about it and fix this issue. Always keep the content on the left side and sidebar on the right side and that solves the problem easily eh. Make sure when inserting the <td> or <div> it comes after the content <td> or <div> tags.

We can’t all have sidebars on the left hand side, because then all websites will look the same. Well now you need a good designer because their creative minds work miracles. They can have the sidebar on the left side using the div properties, or the Master Table law to make the design SEO Friendly. In all cases you must have a valid .css file. To check the validation feel free to use the w3 services because they exist for a reson.
