Why Redesign?

Some of you are probably wondering why did we redesign the site. Well the answer to that is quite simple. The old design was outdated, ugly, and hideous for the modern trend. The design was last touched in 2006, so you can imagine how it was. Table structure, Flash (Eww, Not SEO Friendly), Tons of Grammatical Error, Content was not highlighted and much much more. It was to the point that I was embarrassed to show our portfolio site.

That is how it looked. Now compare that design and our new products such as WPBeginner’s site design. People could not believe that they were both created by the same company. If you check out the current design, you can see how much different and better it is. Enough of bashing the old design, lets see what the site has now.

Starting the Process of Redesign

I am the lead web designer in the team, so it was my job to come up with the design. I wanted this to be very simplistic, yet feature rich. I wanted to give this design the elegant look that I gave WPBeginner. With that in mind I started the design. The first thing I noticed that had to go was the logo because the old logo would not match any of the new designs mock ups that I made. So the first thing I did was re-create the logo. I didn’t want to change the logo completely because this has been the identity since 2006, so I moved the arrow from the middle to the top as you can see in the new design. This was the logo version 2.0

I presented the team with 4 mock ups before they finally liked this purple design. I decided to name the theme “Purple Madness” because that is exactly what it was. Insane use of jQuery and crap load of pressure from the team was making me go MADDDDDDDD. Thus it got the name Purple Madness.

Now one would think, why did I choose Purple? It is not one of the most conventional colors for the web. Well when I chose orange for WPBeginner, I set in my mind that I need to make a purple site and a green site. I did show the team a green version of WPBeginner, but sadly they did not like that. But the Purple one got the approval and now it is on the site. Purple is bright, lively, and attention grabbing. I see it as the New RED except not as annoying. That was my decision behind choosing the color Purple.

(P.S – I really want to create a Green Web Design…Let’s see when I get a chance to do that)

In the Coding Process

Coding this site was one of a kind experience. I did not separate the site in numerous images instead, it is just a few images. You would be surprised to know that the homepage is only using 8 images in which two are the list background plus and it’s hover. There are 3 images in the switcher at the top, so that leaves only 3 background images for the rest of the design.

Font choice, I decided to go ahead with Arial as the main choice because it went well with the logo font. I used Cufon to get the heading fonts which was really easy. I had a tough decision between sIFR and Cufon, but I chose Cufon due to it’s usability. It is a JavaScript thus it does not require the client to have Flash pre-installed unlike sIFR.

Many Portfolio sites have long detailed service page which I think is pretty stupid. Clients don’t really have time to read a whole page that basically says we offer PSD to HTML service. So therefore I decided to put it all in one page (the home page). I am using the best of best content slider script known as Coda. The reason why I picked this script among all the other scripts is the ease of use and the elegant speed. Coda runs very smoothly with all the other JavaScripts running on the site and it functions pretty well.

The WordPress Bit

As you know that I am a huge fan of WordPress. Like all my sites, this one is also powered by WordPress. The last version of Uzzz was also using WordPress, but the portfolio part of the site was powered with Flash. The disadvantage of that was that the site’s portfolio stuff was not read properly by the Search Engine bots that is why I decided to keep everything on WordPress in the new version.

I understand that the image above is too small to see, so make sure you click on it to see the live view to understand what I am talking about.

The site uses the category and post functions to display the portfolio. If you have used WordPress, then you know that by default, you cannot show posts like we are showing in the Portfolio page. All information is stored in one post. You can use custom fields and create 15 new custom fields every time you want to make a new entry in your Portfolio, or you can create a custom write panel like we did.

Pretty Neat eh. Well this function is not something that we do unique. It was actually written by a very cool guy named Spencer who works at WeFunction. (Check out his Tutorial) He is also based out of Florida, and I had a pleasure to meet him at WordCamp Orlando. Well using his function, we were able to make this portfolio job a lot easier.

There is a custom function that will only show Testimonial button if the testimonial exists. Testimonials have their own category, and we are utilizing the wp_query function to call the post data from related posts in the single post page for testimonials. Kinda confused what I am talking about? Just look at this example. The whole portfolio information is being extracted from a different post.

As you can see that the site features Web Design Resources. That is a simple plugin that is pulling information from the site that I want and displaying it in Uzzz. Contact form is created using Contact Form 7 Plugin.

Tweets are being pulled using jQuery and displayed using JSON. To do this, I am using a very elegant script by seaofclouds called Tweet.

The Easy Parts

Because we didn’t want any comments, it cut down on a lot of work. Search is also disabled, so we didn’t have to work a lot on that either. These were the only two easy parts in the site. The rest was not hard either, but it was time consuming.

The Last Bits

The last bits in the design was to make sure everything is working. Then I realize, I didn’t make a 404 page. My favorite part of the design. So I created a Pretty Cool 404 page (or so I think).

The site is using 9 WordPress plugins and I think it is pretty fast loading. It has a YSlow grade of B. Let me know what you thought of this new design.

WordCamps are just events for WordPress users. I have been attending a lot of WordCamps lately. Since Novemeber, I have been to three WordCamps and I spoke at Atlanta. I will be attending WordCamp Miami and I am a confirmed speaker there as well.

So you guys are probably wondering how was my speaking experience. First thing I will say is that it was pretty cool. I consulted with many clients, talked with some known names, but I have never really stood in front a lot of people at a conference and gave a presentation. I was giving a presentation on WordCamp Security and as soon as I looked up, I saw one of the lead developers of WordPress sitting in front of me. Yup, it was Mark Jacquith.

Have you ever had a feeling when you are trying to explain something to somebody and all of the sudden you see the person who actually built that something. Well its not very comfortable when you see someone in front of you who probably knows a lot more about this script than you do because he is the lead developer. Anyways, I have talked with Mark on my past events so it was not that big of a deal. I stood there and gave a pretty decent presentation.

Now till that day there was something I was doing wrong. Removing WordPress version number. I knew many security tricks but I didn’t know that WordPress also sends out the version number in the feeds. So now if you remove it in the header its ok, but if someone really wants to get it they can just go to the feeds and get it.

I will personally try to design more new sites because I think this will be one of the trend that we will see in new designs.

1. Web Developer’s Toolbar

Web Developer`s tool bar probably will become one of the best plugins You`ve ever seen. It comes with his own tool bar that gives many useful tools for analyzing, validating and optimizing web-pages. The great thing about this plugin is that it’s on a few different browsers, so if you switch between them you will be able to use the same plugin on all.

2. HTML Validator

HTML Validator is an extremely powerful tool available to Windows users only. The add-on gives you feedback about errors on the page. It also lets you know where problems need to be addressed. But unless you’re an advanced Web designer, stay away from this tool. It’s very complicated.

3. CSS Validator

CSS Validator adds a right-click option in your browser, sending the CSS to the W3C CSS Validator. It opens the results in a new tab. CSS Validator is a nice tool that will come in handy often.

4. Firebug

Firebug is one of those extensions that you simply can’t be without. It lets you edit, debug, and view CSS, HTML, and JavaScript.

5.. YSlow

YSlow requires FireBug to be installed for it to work, but it’s a great way to find out why your site is running so slowly. It analyzes Web pages and returns issues that are slowing the site down,

6. CSS Viewer

The add-on informs you of all the CSS information you’ll need from a site. Simply click on the page you want, open it in the Tools menu, and it will display CSS information.

7. Greasemonkey

It allows you to customize the way a webpage displays using small bits of JavaScript.

8. JSView

All browsers include a “View Source” option, but none of them offer the ability to view the source code of external files. You can use the JSView extension to solve the problem. If the website you are viewing contains any external js/css files, an icon will appear that says “SS”, “JS”, or both. Each individual file can then be viewed by clicking on the filename. The file will be opened in a new window.

9. Color Zilla

If there’s a color on a Web page that you like, ColorZilla will find the precise code for it and allow you to paste it into your coding program. You can also create custom colors with its built-in palette browser. It saves the most-used colors for easy access later on. It’s powerful, it’s simple, it’s a must-have.

10. Font Finder

Font Finder allows you to highlight a font you like on any site, right-click on the selection, and after choosing “Font Finder”, view the full CSS text styling of the selection. You can then paste that into your own Web page.

11. IE Viewer

This add-on lets you preview websites in IE. It helps when checking for cross browser compatibility. You can also set some websites to always open in IE viewer if there are some compatibility issues.

12. Fire FTP

Along with transferring your files quickly and efficiently, FireFTP also includes more advanced features such as: directory comparison, syncing directories while navigating, SFTP, SSL encryption, search/filtering, integrity checks, remote editing, drag & drop, file hashing, and much more!

13. Screen Grab

Screengrab saves entire web pages as images. This tool will allow You to take screenshots of what is currently on your screen – you can even choose the portion of the screen you want to “grab”!

14. Code Tech

Get the feel of Dreamweaver in a Firefox extension. Edit your documents right next to your web pages as you surf.

15. Aardvark

This tool can be used to clean page from unwanted banners and ads, especially prior to printing a page. Pretty useful for web developers for analyzing the structure of a page.

This post card style look of substrakt designers is just a very creative use on a google map background. This really shows creativity at it its best.

Another retro colorful style of postcard design for the contact form. This style is getting more famous as we see more and more retro designs in the trend.

Tony’s contact form can be best described as well-organized, neat, and simple which makes it very pleasant on the eye.

Min’s contact page might be very simple, but the color combination around it on the background of the page just makes this contact page to be featured in my list.

People try very hard to make their contact form spectacular, but what they don’t understand is that it must incorporate into the design. Alexandru shows how well you can incorporate the contact form in the design with his grunge style contact form design.

7. Bert Timmermans

Bert’s book style contact form is just fabulous. The neatness of it, creativity of it is just superb.

8. Chemistry Recruitment

This folder style look in the contact form really goes well with chemistry recruitment’s whole design.

Very effective use of the notepad is being displayed on this website. Usually you see the notepads on the corner of the page as just a placeholder, but in this case it is a contact form. Very creative.

11. Deluge Studios

Another great example using their map in the contact form. Very nicely incorporated contact form.

12. Headscape Web Design Solution

Headscape shows a very creative touch in their footer. They not only just highlight their contact form, but they also put their staff with their phone lines. This is a good way, but if you have a bigger staff, then you will find difficulties.

13. Envero

If you look at this contact form, you wouldn’t find anything special. But the fact that it is so neat and well organized with a good color combination and spacing, this deserves to be in the list to show that simple contact form are great.

14. Bcandullo

Brian likes the artsy touch to his design. He loves to make corrections therefore you see alot of pencil use on his design. His contact form is well incorporated with the design and goes with the flow.

15. Veboo Labs

Use of a cartoon character right next to the contact form always bring life to your contact area. Veboo labs do just the trick. Their cartoon is very eye friendly and make their contact form stand out.

16. Intuitive Designs

Another example of adding a cartoon next to their contact form is displayed here. This technique really works and it can spice a simple form up.

17. BubblesSoc

I love the work that Bubs put out on the website and the contact form is just one of that. This contact forms goes well with other aspects of the design and it is a perfect example of a well incorporated contact form.

18. Kev Adamson

Kev really knows how to highlight small features when presenting creative work. His contact form fits in a compact area. It does the job, and it has a small little captcha button which I find very cool.

19. Sidebar Creative

A simple text next to the contact form is always catchy if you use good fonts and spacing. Sidebar Creative does just that. Their contact form is very simple, but the organization of it is just noteworthy.

20. Five Cent Stand

Five Cent Stand has a very interesting design and a contact form that fits in it is even more interesting. Because I don’t think I could’ve made a contact form to fit in.

These are just some of the jaw dropping examples of beautiful contact page designs on the web. I am sure there are more that I missed. So you are welcome to share them in the comment box. Folks contact forms are important, so add them in your site because it saves alot of trouble to your users. I see some people put an email in the image, or just text which does the job, but contact form is always preferred.

Coding is a tedious process which is often complex and rigorous. To get through coding easily and without too much stress, you need a good, trustworthy text editor. The most common solution in many people’s eye is Notepad because you can’t go wrong with it, but notepad is not the simplest solution. When working with complex coding, it is helpful to have an editor that gives you a feature of line numbers, highlighting the important areas, support for multiple programming languages, a better find and replace feature, and some other userful features that can make the process of coding a bit less frustrating.

In this post, I have compiled a list of some of the best free text editors for designers and coders which will fulfill your needs. These softwares were designed specifically for coder’s needs. I know the preference of operating system varies among us techy people, so I tried to collect a few for each operating system: Windows, Mac, and Linux. 1. Text Wrangler (Mac OS)

Text Wrangler is by far the better multi-purpose text editor that I saw for Mac. I personally use Text Wrangler as well. Text Wrangler is compatible with some of the most useful plugins orignally made for BBEdit which extends the built-in features. Text Wrangler has a built-in FTP conrol. It can be used as both a programmer-friendly text editor, and a Unix/Server Admin Text editor. One of the cooler functions about text wrangler is its function browser. You can quickly see which function you are working with.

2. Notepad ++ (Windows)

NOTEPAD++ is the best FREE Text Editor for Windows. I use it on my Toshiba, and I can personally say that this is my choice for windows. It has an auto-completion feature (for most supported languages) which guesses what you are trying to write so it will close your div tag for you you just have to type the first few words. It also has a tabbed interface which is great for working with multiple files without cluttering your task bar. It has a strong find-and-replace feature, code folding, and much more. This can really save your time windows users.

3. jEdit (Windows, Mac, Linux)

jEdit is a text editor written in java specially for programmers. The best part about jEdit is that it works with all three operating system. jEdit was designed to combine the best features of the three operating systems. The features include, color coding, support for unicode, XML Support, scriping support, and advanced css support. You can download tons of plugins from their website to expand on the built-in features.

4. Komodo Edit (Windows, Mac, Linux)

Komodo Edit is a free text editor by ActiveState. Komodo Edit is known to be one of the better XML editors. It supports all operating systems, windows, mac, and linux. You can get extensions to add other languages and other features. It has some of the similar features as the award winning Komodo IDE.

5. GNU Emacs (Windows, Mac, Linux)

Emacs is a cross-platform text editor which is targetted toward programmers. Emacs offer tons of features such as project planner, debugger, xml support, scripting support, advanced css support, built in validator, color coded xhtml editing, and more. It also has a file comparison feature which compares the two files and highlights the difference (very useful when you make a slight undocumented change which you don’t remember).

6. Gedit (Linux)

Gedit is the official text editor of the GNOME desktop. Compared to Windows built-in text editor (Notepad), Gedit has more features geared towards usage for programming and mark-up. It has syntax highlighting, tabbed interface for editing multiple files, and spell-checking feature.

7. Smultron (Mac)

Smultron is an easy-to-use text editor due to its very simple interface. It has the basic features you would expect from a text editor such as syntax highlighting/coloring. It also has some other helpful features such as the ability to split which allows you to view files side-by-side, and a code snipplet library to allow you to store your most used code blocks. The best part about this plugin is that it helps you focus by having a full-screen mode. Its for Slackers like me.

8. Bluefish (Mac, Linux)

Bluefish Editor is an open source text editor geared towards programmers and web designers. It’s famous for its speedy function, and a lightweight text editor that can open 500+ documents with ease. It has a built-in function reference browser for PHP, Python, CSS, and HTML just so you can quickly learn about particular codes.

9. Caditor (Windows)
