How Not To Ask For Links To Your Blog
New blogs are popping up left and right. There are thousands of blogs that claim to teach you how to make money online. There are hundreds of bloggers that are self-proclaimed web experts. Each blogger is trying to get the most traffic, most backlinks, and the most credibility. There are certain popular figures like Darren Rowse, Shoemoney, and others. At the same time there are new coming in the industry. So you get to ask a question how do new blogs get famous? Well they get links from other bloggers and that is how their reader base increases. I have been started to receive this sort of emails quiet a lot, so I have decided to mention here on my blog how not to ask for a backlink to your blog.
Here is what these emails sound like:
My name is XXX XXXX and I’m a great fan of Balkhis! Balkhis inspired me to create my own blog. I would like to share my knowledge as an entrepreneur with other entrepreneurs. Since linkbuiliding is very important, I want to ask you if you want to trade links with me. If so, please answer me and I will put a link to your site on my homepage, so you can link back to me!
Never ever ever ask a blogger to trade links with you if you are starting a blog. Specially one that is already well known. You know why? Because he or she will turn you down. Before you ask for trading links you need to consider:
What do you get if they link to you?
What will they get if they link to you?
Who is getting the most benefit?
If the benefit is not mutual, then you will not get a link. But it will prove one thing for sure. That you are an idiot for asking. You want to start a web developers blog claiming yourself an expert and then begging for a link? Doesn’t really sound like an expert.
Another thing wrong with the email above is Kissing Ass. No one like Kiss Ass except for another Kiss Ass. I obviously won’t consider you as a special case if you put you are a great balkhis fan. So never ever start of saying that you are a big fan of them. Because by saying that you already put yourself below them.
Even though you need a link, you do not need to make yourself inferior. Try to stay on same ground.
Never ask a link for your main site. Because only idiots will link to your main site without knowing you. Blogroll links are usually bought or linked to special friends. If I don’t know, I won’t link to you.
These are the few things that I can think of right now of how not to ask for backlinks. Keep updated with my blog because in the next post I will show you how to ask for a link.

Hey, I am Syed Balkhi, The guy who is behind Balkhis Inc. I entered the industry back in 2002 not knowing a single thing. I barely spoke English at that time. In the past six years, my language barrier has been eliminated. Aside from English, now I also speak html, and php. Along with the languages I have also managed to master a few arts. Art of web-designing started when I first entered. Messing around with photoshop, I learned how to create my first web design. Now I founded a web designing firm Uzzz Productions. After running numerous amount of websites in various niche, I have mastered the art of web-development. Now I am compiling a resource of what I already know, and what I am learning on this blog. This resource is to help me if I ever need a guide to look back to, and it is help my fellow webmasters.

Haha, what fools
I feel so good that I have never asked for a link exchange from anyone and also have never paid for links, so I’m all natural.
It’s just funny to think that they think they have a chance
Totally agree with you. Asking for links is really premature way to get in touch with other blogger. And i second that it should be totally dispatched in communication between two bloggers. Achieving backlinks must come naturally and as some sort of reward for hard work…
The way that i would ask for a link is if I could write a guest post for their blog that relates to their niche. I feel this is the best way because you will get readers to your blog if you write quality guest posts.
Yup that is one of the ways that I will mention in my next post.
I just thinking the exact same thing, that way you prove your worth and get a valuable link the right way.
I could not agree more. It is demeaning to ask for links when you are just starting out. Once you are established, others will ask you!
Exactly. So instead if you want to get established write good articles. I have often got emails from people who literally have 5 posts and want me to link to them.
But I love kissing ass lol
Well I don’t do link exchanging anyway so whenever someone asks me to, I’d just tell them that I don’t do link exchanges
Haha that is too funny, if someone claims himself to be an expert than why does he have to beg for a link, Im sure if he is so good people will link to him naturally with out the begging.
Yeah dude, I have been receiving mails like this as well. Honestly, they do get quite irritating at times..
Ben
That is so true.
I can’t wait for some howto about promoting your new blog and getting backlinks =)
Yeah getting backlink’s can be a rude experience with some people. The best way I have found is to instead offer them some advertising, or review and then ask for a guest post instead.
That way you can add a link in the content instead on the sidebar, something that is left for premium sponsor links.
Ugh… The countless emails that request these… Makes me feel good somewhat, but I hate flattery so a big no-no. I wouldn’t do it myself either because it just really degrades you. I’m probably a bit too pessimistic, but asking for it usually comes across to me as begging for it.
A great post on a subject not covered enough. It is ok to ask a blogger about this type of stuff in an email, this in itself does not really cause much of a problem with me, UNLESS they procede to step 2 and continue to nag me when I am not quick to respond while I take care of work that is paying me to be productive. I try to hand a few back links out a month just to lend a hand if I feel a new blog merits it.
Just make sure you dont pester the blogger in question!
I think most of the time, people just don’t know any better. They haven’t been properly educated enough about getting any kind of links… I think the professional bloggers get enough of such emails to have them write an ebook just to educate them on how to properly get backlinks!

Thats great balkhis, I will read this post when ever i will ask for a link though.
I would still ask to get a link from someone especially if you are just starting. Why, because you never know; it is better to ask and fail than never ask at all. The likely hood is small but you never know if the person you asked is feeling generous or not until you do. Also the person might be really impressed by your blog or website that they take a chance on you. There are too many possibilities to just not ask because it is unlikely. People still play the lottery even though their chances are like one in a million, but someone will always win.
Yeah you shouldn’t demand any links if you don’t have a previous relationship with a blogger.
Lmao. I love the way you worded the letter. Makes the writer sound so “noobish”.
I get an insane amount of link exchange type of emails just like the one you quoted. They always appear automated to me and I basically just treat them like spam and delete.
guest blogging is better.
