Improve your SEO by Organizing your external links
This is the 3rd post in the series of showing you How I increased my search engine traffic by 258% in less than a month. Before you begin reading those, I strongly recommend you check out the past two posts in the series on Guide to refine the Semantic Web Markups and Most Effective SEO move you can make.
Ok lets get this thing rolling. Now If you haven’t noticed after seeing the past two posts in the series, the key point that I am stressing is organizing your content. By doing that you are making the job easier for search engines. That is why they will love you even more and give you the right spot in your Search Engine Ranking Positions (SERPs). In this post we will be discussing on how organizing your links can improve your Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
How to Organize External Links?
You can organize your links by using relation tags. How do your links relate to you? For instance, you might be linking out to your friends in your blog roll. Your own company, Your own social media profiles, Just websites that you like. But how does Search Engines know how these external links relate to you. Well that is why rel= tags are used with links.
Most of you are familiar with rel=”nofollow”. I know some people who no follow every external link in fear of google. But that is not the way to go. You don’t need to be afraid. You need to work with them. For those of you who don’t know the definition, it means the bot should not follow this link at all. That way you get to keep your link juice and strength to your page. Theoretically you should rank higher in PR, but that is not always the case. So what should you use?
Well, I kind of made up my own categories, and I suggest you to make your own. With each rel tag, you need to have your own category associated with it. So it will be like rel=”category”.
People are afraid to put their own social media profiles without a nofollow attribute. When you do that, you are not giving your profiles the juice. I think instead of nofollow what you should do is attach a ‘me’ tag. For example my youtube profile:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/mbalkhi" rel="me">Youtube</a>
Rel=me is a well known tag around, but you can be creative and make your own categories. For example, I got accepted in 9rules. Which is an award basically because not every site that applies get in. Anyways a required term of inclusion was that you would put 9rules logo on your site with a link back.
<a href="http://www.9rules.com" rel="award">9rules</a>
Above is how my link tag looks. Obviously instead of the name I put the image, but you get the point right. There are other known tags that wordpress advocates if you ever used blogroll you should see a tab that says link relationships.

You can use all those tags shown in the picture above such as friend, sibling, spouse, child, kin, etc. Check out the XFN Guide if you want to know more popular ones.
Now I am not saying don’t use no follow. I do link to people who I don’t like linking to just to make a reference therefore I just add a no follow to their link. But if I want to give credit to someone, I don’t no follow them. If I like someone’s site, and I mention it in my posts I don’t no follow it. So if you get the point what I am saying.
Advantages of Rel tags
In my opinion, your sites look more organized. Advantages of rel=”nofollow” are well known. It keeps your link juice and page strength to yourself etc etc. But advantages of the other rel tags are relatively not known. All I am going to say is that I think this possibly played a role in my search engine traffic, but no guarantee. I know that search engines look at popular rel= tags such as nofollow and me. But I don’t know about others.
Note: I did not read any book/ebook that suggest using creative relation tag helps your ranking. No book/ebook says that you cannot use them either. This is just my sole opinion or you can say an educated inference that I am making. Things that I am trying out and liking it.

Hey, I am Syed Balkhi, The guy who is behind Balkhis Inc. I entered the industry back in 2002 not knowing a single thing. I barely spoke English at that time. In the past six years, my language barrier has been eliminated. Aside from English, now I also speak html, and php. Along with the languages I have also managed to master a few arts. Art of web-designing started when I first entered. Messing around with photoshop, I learned how to create my first web design. Now I founded a web designing firm Uzzz Productions. After running numerous amount of websites in various niche, I have mastered the art of web-development. Now I am compiling a resource of what I already know, and what I am learning on this blog. This resource is to help me if I ever need a guide to look back to, and it is help my fellow webmasters.

I understand that it helps keep and ur links orgasnised, but how big of an effect does it have on rankings?
Like I said, I have no idea how much effect it has on rankings… I don’t even know if it is significant or not. Because no search engine said that it would help if you do this….
But It was one of the things I changed with this new design. Now you can try changing it because it is not hurting you…. Might even benefit
This is the first time that I have heard of rel=me or putting categories of your own choice, I am not sure about this till I do a little research on this!
interesting. it’s only now that i’ve heard of other tags aside from no follow. unfortunately, not much yet i can do as i’m on blogger.
I am pretty sure you could do all your links by hand, or at least any that you may think are really important.
Yup .. I am sure you can do that pretty easily. You normally won’t have that many links…
I read in another blog(it might have been shoemoney) that using rel”self” tags adds authority to a links that point to your own pages or your own profiles, because who is more of an authority on your own stuff than you. So the more authority a link has the more juice in the serps.
Thanks for the clarification Adam
I really appreciated you taking your time out to comment
This is off subject but how long does it take to process a video that has just been uploaded to YouTube. I am trying to help out the nonprofit organization that I volunteer for and can’t seem to figure out placing videos on the blog.
It really depends, but never took more than 30 minutes for me. Leave the video alone by you constantly opening the video page you are delaying the process…

I haven’t got the chance to examine how using the other rel attributes will affect my rank, so thanks for the information.
PS: While we’re talking “no-follow” here, allow me to suggest 15 links on your blog you should consider to “no-follow”. http://www.homebiz.bukiki.com/avoid-blog-pagerank-leak-manage-tips/
I doubt this will have any affect on rankings, but I guess time will tell. My link juice I pass to my readers with do-follow comments!
Today Google finally updated the PR system! My pagerank went up to 5. I never used the no-follow link in my BlogRoll or any footer links so a lot of people I linked to ended up getting a pagerank of 5 because of my blog! I am okay with this. But is this going to make me have less pagerank or affect me negatively in any way?
Hmm I wouldn’t say that others got a PR 5 just because of your blog. No this will not hurt you in any ways.
Difficult to say if they would help. Equally difficult to say if you would penalised or not in certain circumstances? Not sure I would take the risk.
Interesting article, thanks.
I definitely don’t do this much. Isn’t there a hack to allow you to add no follow within the wordpress interface? Because it usually doesn’t show up just putting it in the relationship box. Do the other one’s show up like that?
What about affiliate links? Should I put “affiliate” in the relation box?
I usually no follow all affiliate links. Because I don’t think my affiliate link needs any link juice…

Balkhis, sorry if I missed it in your post, but is it true that a rel=”me” is the same thing as a rel=”no follow”? If not, then what is the difference? And why would you want to do a rel=”me” for your other websites instead of just leaving it alone and letting the pagerank pass on?
Rel me lets the search engine know that this website is mine, so it should be given more authority then the rest.
Sweet! I wish I had known of this before so my pagerank would pass on to my other websites too. So it’s better to use a rel=”me” than just not using it at all right? I’m going to convert links to all my blogs with the rel=”me”, thanks.
yes it is better to have them.
Uhmmm, rel=”me” let SE know that site is mine I’m really sure about that. But SE will given more authority, are you sure ?
I think that it does. No hard core proof.
It seems like a useful way to stay organized. But does this link list affect the google ratings for pr?
I have been trying to figure out the advantages of using rel=bookmark.
Do you know of any?

Well, I was only aware of the rel=”no follow”. It is something that we really can use to great effect and also have quality and as Syed pointed out, improve our SEO.
Okay… so what you are saying is that, if you have a lot of no follow links then you get some SEO strength for yourself and if you have follow links then it helps out the links owner? Is that the just of what you are talking about?
Thanks for this great post. I have never heard of using the rel tags in this way.
