Long Tailed Keywords

Mar 19, 2008  Syed Balkhi  SEO

Do you know that half the people who claim themselves as seo experts try to rank for strong keywords. Let me use the most common examples. A typical directory owner would target the term “Web Directory”. But do you really think that people will type that in google? I don’t think so. That is just a vanity project to rank for such terms.

If I am researching for something, I want my key term to be very accurate, so if i am looking for a 3 column free wordpress theme, I won’t go in google and type wordpress themes, but I will go type in 3 column free wordpress themes. This keyword is called Long Tailed Keyword.

Many webmasters are interested in making money from adsense. I see alot of websites have adsense some where now a days because of the penalties caused by paid links. Well, the trick to make money through adsense is the more tragetted the better it is. Which means you need to rank for the long tailed keywords to get the targetted audience who will actually click on your ads.

When I call the general keywords a vanity project, Why I call them those is because they will cost you alot of money to make it to the top page, and staying there will require even more investment, and the return from those will not be as much as the return from the long-tailed keywords. The main keyword might get you 10 visitors a day, but 20 of the long tailed keywords will get you 20 visits which out numbers the 10 from that one main keyword.

As a blogger, I pick my titles very carefully because I know when i type this title most likely then not, My blog will show up for that long tailed keyword unless it is a competitive keyword. Since I have launched Balkhis, most of the Search Engine traffic is coming through the long tailed keywords.

A trick to rank higher for the long tailed keyword is to have those in your url and in the title, so for instance if the title of this post is Long Tailed Keywords, then the url of this post should be balkhis.com/seo/long-tailed-keywords

stay tuned and in my next post I will teach you guys how to set your permalink structure in a more seo-friendly way.

No clicks is because your site might not be adsense optimized. Some sites have adsense placed in them in such a way that it blends in the content. Another reason for no clicks is not targetted ads. Very little traffic means no one is searching for that topic.

[...] Whereas say the user was looking how to set up a blog. They won’t look at the term blogs. They will look up the term “How to set up a blog”. So if you rank high for this term it will be more beneficial for you rather than the term blogs itself. It is good to rank for one word keywords, but in my eyes those are just bragging rights nothing more. So pick your keywords wisely. (Preferably long tail keywords) [...]
