Balkhis - Vision For Success

What Settings to use in All-in-one-SEO-Pack for Wordpress?

Yesterday I posted about 5 things that can hurt your Search Engine Ranking Positions of your Website, and in there I advised bloggers to use All in one SEO Pack for Wordpress. But then I decided that it would help my users more if I post what I am doing with Balkhis.

Before you begin reading you should download the All in one SEO Plugin if you haven’t done already.

For those who don’t know what All in one SEO Plugin does for your wordpress this is for you. This plugin optimizes your blog for search engine. It allows you to select how the page titles of your blog will be generated, it gives you an option to have unique meta description, meta keywords, and title for all your posts and pages.

Now once you install this plugin, you will have to go to your admin panel > settings > and you will see a separate tab for all in one seo pack.

Settings for Balkhis looks some thing like this

All in one seo pack for wordpress - recommended settings

I am not using archives so if you are using the archive make sure that in your settings option, you go down and deindex archive pages. I put the title for my blog in tags and search keywords other than that I don’t abuse my title keyword, and neither should you.

The above settings are not set in stone. This is just my way of doing it, and it has been working for me. Therefore if you are starting your blog and get this plugin (which you should) don’t leave the settings as default. Use this one instead.

I’ve only recently started to blog and even more recently (like two days ago) learned about SEO plugin. My new blog just went live last night :) so I want to get this SEO right before making many more posts

I’ve the plugin installed and activated, went with the suggestions you made but when I look at my pages I’m get something like this: http://www.vegetarian-worldwide.com/?p=3. I might not know much about SEO but I can guess this is not search engine friendly!!

The post was saved as ‘High IQ link being vegetarian.’ Any ideas where I might have went wrong.

What I told you will help you change the title, but to change the url

You must follow the steps in the post above. Let me know how that goes.

Problem sorted :)

Looks very much like I’ll be visiting your site on a regular basis.

A bit cheeky of me I know as I have only a few posts at the moment but feel free to visit http://www.vegetarian-worldwide.com and leave a little note. Might encourage others when they get to hear about me!!

Thanks for posting about this. I admit it took me a while before finally ‘configuring’ out the All-in-one SEO pack in wordpress :( I was lost in darkness for about 6 months.

Thanks for this tip. I’ll follow what you have posted. Thanks for this great SEO tip :D

I need to know what settings to use for

Use noindex for Categories:
Use noindex for Archives:
Use noindex for Tag Archives:

You can check my blog out to get an idea of the way I’m set up.

Thanks a lot

I would say use no Index for Archives, and Tags… Categories is really a personal choice. I am not using no index for categories .. if that helps at all.

So basically in my way your settings would look like this

Use noindex for Categories : Not selected

Use noindex for Archives: Selected

Use noindex for Tag Archives: Selected

Yeah but most of my posts appear in more than one category. Would this change anything? Would I get dupe content penalties?

if that is the case than yes noindex categories also…

I try not to put post in multiple categories hence why I chose my settings :)

So, I should noindex everything? Then, how will search engines find my content?

you still have your homepage indexed, and your post pages indexed.

Display top 15 recent posts on the homepage. Get a sitemap plugin. Link to sitemap file from homepage, and submit it to google webmaster tool.

All of your pages will be found, and the repetition of the content won’t be done….

A lot of friends of mine have lost their Page Ranks due to sudden changes in the title of posts and other pages. Must be some flaw in their system or somethin but I have observed that over quite a few blogs.

But google has come out with a simple solution. If you have signed up for Google webmaster tools, you can simply head to https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/reconsideration?hl=en and request for a reconsideration. That’s it! (I know, very ungoogle like to be so straight forward). Just tell them that your site has had a change of Title and they actually restore your PR!

Comment by Syed Balkhi
2008-06-05 17:21:48

how can you be so sure that it was due to title changes .. I don’t think google just restore pr like that.

Comment by Angad Sodhi
2008-06-16 02:58:48

I’ve seen that happen with 3 wp blogs. They had made no other major changes in the past at that time. They were not even buying links or selling them. But their PRs had suddenlt gone bust(become 0!). They all mentioned in their application that they had recently made changes to their titles. All 3 of them had their PRs restored.

It does happen!

Hello Syed,
Good day, I have a couple of questions I hope you’ll give me some answers. I’m just a starter.

Here is my problem, in google i typed in site:http://www.whatstlatest.net/ then it showed me some of my pages, but my question is the title of the results are different but underneath the title, descriptions are all the same.

Please try it and see for yourself, goto google and type in site:http://www.whatsthelatest.net/ then press enter. You should see what i mean.

Please help me, is there any misconfigurations i have done?
I’ll really appreciate for your help. I’ll be waiting for your response.

Thank you and more power.

Alright I have checked the url that you requested. The problems that I see is that the description underneath your logo is overriding everything else.

My question is have you set custom title, description, and keyword for all pages?

If you have then remove the slogan text or make it an image and see if that changes anything. (I think it will).

Let me know the results.

Wow, You really replied. Thank you for your answers sir.

Yep, i think the description underneath my logo is really the one that’s overriding everything else.

What do mean sir when you asked “Have you set custom title, description and keyword for all pages?”…

Every time i post, i always go down and add some All in One SEO features. I add the title, description and keyword in the All in One SEO space provided every time i post.

Am i doing something wrong? Should i fill the tags textbox when i post? Or do i need not to put anything on All in One SEO?

Thank you very much for helping me sir. Really appreciate it.

You are doing everything right. Just remove that text and it should make it work.

Thank you sir.
How should i do that? Where should i do that? Under what, Settings General or in the All in One SEO?

Should i make it an image and attached it to my logo? I mean the description below my logo. Should i make it an image instead?

Yes making it an image and giving it an alt tag with a title would be the best way to go about it.

Okay sir, Thank you.
But what about the general settings? should i delete the contents of blog description? Because it has the content of “Latest Tech, News, Gadgets, Reviews, Tips and Tricks, Tutorial and Guides, Hacks and Tweaks.”?????

Comment by Syed Balkhi
2008-07-17 10:26:46

no don’t delete it just don’t make it visual in the template.

We still want it under the head part just don’t want it to display so

in your code you will see something php code for title just remove that and put an image.

Thanks for the reply sir.
Just one last thing. I am quite confuse in what you said,

“in your code you will see something php code for title just remove that and put an image.”

1. What code?
2. What specific file that does code exist?
3. What should i do?
4. How many files should i edit?

How are you displaying that text in the header? Where is this text coming from? I don’t know how your theme is being opereated but most likely it is in your header.php

You only need to change your header.php

what do i need to change in the header.php?

Just remove that code..

If it is text then remove that. If it is not then find this code and remove it

<?php wp_title(); ?>

Comment by Syed Balkhi
2008-07-18 02:02:31

Also make a note remove it only in the tag not in the head area.
